Mozhgan Keshavarz
Mozhgan Keshavarz is an Iranian women's rights activist who began campaigning against compulsory hijab in 2014 through My Stealthy Freedom. She subsequently joined the White Wednesdays and Girls of Revolution Street campaigns, advocating for women's freedom to choose what they wear.
As arrests of women protesters increased, she continued campaigning in streets, on public transport and through social media, calling for the release of imprisoned women and defending their rights. Her activism led to her dismissal from work and made finding employment difficult. She also travelled to remote areas of Iran to document the lives of women, including entrepreneurs and those living in difficult circumstances.
On 25 April 2019, agents raided her home and arrested her. She was sentenced to a total of 23 years and six months in prison. During detention, she endured rape, sexual abuse and torture. She was also sentenced to death on the charge of "corruption on earth" and was forced to leave Iran.
She works with My Stealthy Freedom and United Against Gender Apartheid. Keshavarz continues to advocate for freedom, equality and an end to the repression of women.
